A few years before we had Emberly, I worked in a small cafe that was located in a quaint locally-owned bookstore. A shelf in the employee room in the basement held books that were free for us to take- generally galley proofs (advanced reading copies). Somehow this book made its way down there, and when I took it home to our crumbling upstairs apartment I fell in love with the rhythm of the words, the beautiful watercolor illustrations, and the message. This has been my all-time favorite book (except the Bible, I suppose), for several years now. It's a treat!
Agate is moping around, feeling useless compared to his talented friends, who each just happened to be named and colored the same as a birthstone gem. "What good is a moose?" he asks himself. He talks about his friends and all the wonderful things that they can do. Then his friends say, "If we are gems, so are you." So it turns out that agate has all the colors inside him, though his outside is plain, and he finds that he has a lot to offer the world. I love this book!
